Unusual spongeware sea pottery, probably from the 1800's, with turquoise, wood and coconut shell beads. Threaded onto an adjustable length woven cotton cord. The piece of sea pottery is one and a half inches long.
Treasures from the sea! I hadn’t heard of spongeware before, as it doesn’t turn up much down south. The patterns were made by hand, often by women working from home, using shapes cut from natural sea sponge. This was a way for poorer people to have decorated pottery in their homes, as it was cheaper to buy than the transferware that was popular at the time. I love that no two pieces will ever have been the same! I am desperate to get back up there and find more now!
The sea pottery is a genuine beach combing find from the Cumbria coast.
