Fossil crocodile scute, which is aromoured skin plate, from diplocynadon hantoniensis, around 30 million years old. Collected by me on the Isle of Wight. On adjustable woven cotton cord with mixed wood and coconut shell beads. The fossil is one and a quarter inches wide and just under one and a quarter inches long. This is an exceptional piece of diplocynadon skin plate, an almost complete scute with a small ridge down the middle.
The coast of the Isle of Wight is very rich in fossils, with the north and the south of the island having very different geology and fossils from different periods. The south coast is Jurassic era rocks and fossils like ammonites and dinosaur bone, but the north is much younger rocks with creatures which are ancestors of our modern turtle, crocodile and hippo and others.
All the items in this shop are handmade by me with great love and great care, mostly in my little studio on the Isle of Wight, a beautiful little island off the south coast of England (sometimes I sit and make them on the beach too).
