Fossil alligator scute, which is aromoured skin plate, from diplocynadon hantoniensis, around 30 million years old. Collected by me on the Isle of Wight. On fully beaded necklace threaded with chrysocolla and black lava stone beads with little dyed bone spacer beads and finished with a sturdy lobster clasp. This short necklace is eighteen inches long and the little fossil is one inch long.
The coast of the Isle of Wight is very rich in fossils, with the north and the south of the island having very different geology and fossils from different periods. The south coast is Jurassic era rocks and fossils like ammonites and dinosaur bone, but the north is much younger rocks with creatures which are ancestors of our modern turtle, alligator and hippo and others.
All the items in this shop are handmade by me with great love and great care, mostly in my little studio on the Isle of Wight, a beautiful little island off the south coast of England (sometimes I sit and make them on the beach too).
