This is an unusual piece of charoite. Charoite is usually a uniform purple, but this piece is paler, with a formation of the purple running down through the middle, although the whole piece still has the silky, fibrous shine which charoite is known for.
Charoite is a genuinely rare gemstone which can be found in just one rock formation in Siberia. It was apparently first discovered in the forties but wasn’t recognised until the seventies as many people thought it must be dyed, as the colour and fibrous shine are so unusual. It is believed that the name comes from the Russian word ‘chary’ meaning magic, or charm. This piece of charoite is just under one and a half inches long. The macrame pendant is threaded onto an adjustable woven cotton cord with pale amethyst, wood and small coconut shell beads.
